What is the purpose of a music video?

• A market tool to promote artist/song – something being branded in the music video to promote the item to be sold to the viewers of the music video, an example of this in ‘Beauty and the Beat’ by Justin Bieber is the shots of ‘Just Dance 4’ 
• Short narrative or representation of artist – a short scene throughout the music video which take part with acting from the artist and another actor\actress. This gives a story behind the song and has a purpose for the music video, it is also entertaining the audience.  
• Attract a particular type of audience – something in the video whether its pretty girls that would attract boys or water parks like in Justin Bieber ‘ Beauty and a Beat’ which will attract a younger female audience. 
• Buy into the artist lifestyle – they normally use expensive items like cars and designer bags which would attract the audience into watching their stuff and seeing what else they have and would make them buy it as they want to look like their icons.
• Show different generic conventions of a genre/music video - 
• Audience to remember music video – when they think about the song the audience would be able to describe what happens in the music video. If it is a good music video it would be memorable
• Audience to understand more about a song
• Audience request music videos – on music channels where you can request music videos. If they enjoy the song and is a good music video then more people would request it, therefore getting the artist more publicity.
• Build a relationship with the artist
