Research into Chosen Music Genre 15 @

The genre of music that Nina Nesbit sings is singer/songwriter acoustic indie. This is a genre i am very keen on as there are many artists who put a lot of thought into their songs and they tell a lot about the artist. Like Nina who talks about relationships, there are many others such as John Mayer and Taylor Swift. I thought it was a good idea to do Nina Nesbit as she isn't mainstream and we could make a really emotional heartfelt music video rather than a video that doesn't mean anything.

I am going to analyse Adele and Amy Winehouse from the singer/songwriter genre. Both these artists have made songs which are very soulful and have a nice meaning to them. This what makes me relate to them and want to always listen to them. Adele's song 'Someone Like You' which is about her ex boyfriend finding another girl and settling down with her which is something she didn't get to experience with him. Amy Winehouse's song 'Rehab' is about people telling her she should go to rehab but she doesn't want to, both of these songs relate to their lives. Which is probably the main thing in Singer/Songwriters that they write about their lives, this makes it more personal and lets them relate to their audience more.

Adele 'Someone Like You' -
Black and white film
Its a performance music video
By herself by the river
Simple music video
Handheld camera - easy
Not a lot of effort
Emotional music video links in with the song
Becomes a bit bold at the end - her make up is dark around her eyes

Amy Winehouse 'Rehab'
Musicians follow her around the house
Trumpets and drums
Pajamas - simple
Her life is simple and knows she doesn't want to go to rehab
Different settings - bathroom bedroom office
White room which looks like prison - as if she has been arrested for drugs

Mise-en-scene is used in Adele's video 'Someone Like You' by

The setting is a simple shot by the riverside, this shows her soft side and that she can be vulnerable even though she is dressed in black showing that she is a strong individual but have a conventional setting lets us know that she really is sensitive. The only person who is in the music video is Adele herself. This again shows her sensitive side and that she's isolated. There is a dark figure behind her at the end but you don't get to see any of his features as he is in shadow. There isn't much lighting and the colour is in black and white, this shows that she isn't very confident and adds a mystery about the song of who's it about. There isn't any props which is fairly conventional about the genre that their simple and leave all of the attention to the voice and instruments, which are often a common sighting in this music genre.

The camera shots which have been used in Adele's music video for 'Someone like you' are mainly close ups. This is so we can see her singing the song and her facial expressions, this lets us have a closer relationship with the artist and can relate to her more as we think we can feel her emotion. There is also mid shots to show her outfit and that it is all black, this is common in mourning clothes which makes us feel as though she has lost someone forever which the lyrics are about. We also see the grounds around her while she is walking down the river, there are many locations in London which shows that this is her home town.
Their isn't any editing used in Adele's music video. This makes the whole video very simple and shows again how vulnerable she is. The whole video the camera is following her walking beside the river.

The target audience for Adele, would be women from 14 - 30. Many different ages listen to Adele for the meaning of the song for older women who have been in that situation and for younger people who love her voice. This means that her target audience could be quiet wide and her secondary audience is even wider with lots of different women and even men listening to her music to relax. The artist is represented as a real girl, who has a natural voice and sings songs which can relate to lots of girls. This makes her more approachable and relatable as the audience think that she is down to earth and goes through a lot of what every 'normal' person goes through. The style of music video for Adele's song 'Someone like you' is performance, as she is singing into the camera while walking down the river. She is also alone and their isn't much of a narrative. In 'Someone like you' there is a link between the music and visuals, as its a very soft song with a lot of meaning and she's walking past the river which is romantic. Also genre characteristics as you would expect a songwriters lyrics to be thoughtful and have a lot of meaning.

Mise-en-scene is used in Amy Winehouse's video 'Rehab' by

The music video is set in various rooms in a house, at first she is in her bedroom dressed in a dressing gown, this shows her vulnerability with drug use. She is surrounded by musicians playing their instrument, this makes her image very real and natural. All of the musicians are dressed in their pajamas as well which fits in with the style of music video. As she walks around the house we find that the musicians follow her around still playing their instruments. As the song progresses Amy gets changed into a white coat which again shows her vulnerability but shows she has a bit more confidence in saying no to going to rehab as she is covered up more and her musicians are still dress in their night clothes. In the bridge of the song she seems like she has more of an attitude as well as being in a black jacket.

The music video is 90% performance and 10% context as she is always singing to the camera. The camera shots used are close ups, mid shots and long shots that gradually change from each. This lets the audience see more of the set. There are a lot of straight cuts which is the only editing style used. This is used throughout the music video at roughly 3/4 seconds average although they change a lot at 1 second to get more in the music video while letting the audience see the musicians playing.

The target audience for Amy Winehouse is roughly 14-25 years old. This is because its a very emotional video, this will attract the audience as they would feel involved with Amy always performing to the audience. The artist is represented as a very crazy individual who's singing a song about drugs, this lets the audience know that she is involved in them while her parents are trying to get her to go to rehab. As she is a singer/songwriter we expect her to write about her life and for her songs to be about the experiences she has had.

I think the research on 2 artists from the singer/songwriter genre will assist planning my own music video by giving me ideas about performance style. It will also help me with ideas as they are both the only performer in the music video although Amy had musicians in her they aren't a main character.

Copyright 8

Copyright

Copyright is a legal concept designed by most governments ensuring that the original piece of work stays exclusive and doesn't have the rights to be copied. It also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work. Its used in the music industry to make sure other artists don't steal their work or make a better copy and try to exploit the original artist.
We had to apply for copyright to the artist's record label so we could use the song for educational purposes. This is so when we make the music video we don't publish it and try to get money instead of Universal getting it. In order to email them i had to find the exact address to email it to so that i had a chance of getting a reply. I search Nina Nesbitt's record label which is Universal and emailed a request for our group to use 'The Apple Tree' to record a music video. The email address which is info@umusic.com. So far we haven't got an email from the record label so we shall email it again until we get a response.

Dear copyright holder,
We are a group of A Level student’s from West Hatch High School, writing to request your permission for the song ‘The Apple Tree’ by Nina Nesbitt with your permission, we would create a music video for this song, which would part of our coursework.
The song would only be used in an educational context, viewed only by our media class and OCR examination’s officer. It will not be released to a large audience. The audience and your company would of course, be recognised throughout and a copyright notice may be added to our projects if you wish. In this case, you may send us this information.
We look forward in hearing from you,
Kind regards

Initial Planning Ideas 14

My group members are;
Rhianna Macleay
Jenna Van Bergen
Drew Wyllie
Georgia Crandon

In the first meeting we discussed
what song we would like to do,
the narrative for the music video and
what other ideas we would like to add in.

The artists that we thought of were Nina Nesbitt, Ellie Golding, The XX and Florence and the Machine.

We originally wanted to do a song by Nina Nesbitt as she wasnt mainstream so people wouldnt exactly know her music and compare everything back to the music video. 'The Apple Tree' hasnt got a diverse music video which also makes it easier to create a music video as we dont have any of her ideas in our head. The vibe for our music video was to have an edgy storyline which was similar to 'We Found Love' by Rihanna.

At first we was going to make a music video to Nina Nesbitt's 'Stay Out' but felt that the original music video was perfect for the song. We didnt want to risk trying to make a new video as we may end up copying parts of the music video and ending up the final copy not being our own. The genre which is an acoustic song with an alternative style music video is perfect for our ideas, which consist of a love story that will be filled with memories of the relationship. This matches the lyrics and can create the audience to feel more connection with the artist.

Research into the diversity of music videos 6

Many music artist choose that when they make their music video they change the rules and make it unique. The way they change it to make the memorable is anything from having a strong narrative, big celebrities, an outrageous setting, the clothing or non-clothing they are wearing, iconography, censorship and their behaviour and the budget which was spent. Many of these points make music videos attract an audience and they start to like the director and the artist. It stands out from their other videos and videos in the genre, and brings attention to it so more people become interested by it.

What makes a music video unique?
-Strong narrative
-Big celebrities
-Setting
-Clothing/non
-Iconography
-Censorship/Behaviour
-Budget

Christ Cunningham

'Come to Daddy'
1) The presentation is a short film with the genre of dance. It goes against conventions so their is no club settings or strobe lights. The characters which are in it are fantasy nightmares, they all have masks on and look like they are children. This scars the audience and makes you feel bad as their is an old lady, who is vulnerable. It is very fast paced, and has spooky facial features which are blue on the television which is left outside at the beginning of the clip. The sound of the song is like someone scratching some DJ decks. You see the 'children' hitting objects with a bat, this shows that they are crazy and are probably under a spell from the television. The setting which looks like a council block lets us know it is on a cheap budget and looks quiet dirty. When the childish music comes on and 2 girls run out from the door, this adds a bit of freakiness into it and with the kids ruining the place, with bats and kicking rubbish about shows thats theres something wrong with these kids, and they are what you would expect children to act like.

The music video is diverse and doesn't follow Goodwin's theory. There isn't an artist which obviously you need when you make a music video, and wouldn't be shown on a music channel.

As the audience you wouldn't create a relationship with the artist, as their isn't one and because there's no reason for you to feel sadness for them because you cant get involved as there is so much going on and its so crazy.
Cunningham has also worked with artists such as Madonna on her video 'Frozen' where the genre is Gothic. There is a lot of black in the music video such as the animals, where there are black eagles. This gives a spooky feel as there not the kindest of animals. Its an unknown location with a edgy feel. It looks like its covered in ice. This again gives a spooky feel as everything in the frame is black wheres as the setting is white so everything stands out. This completely goes against typical pop conventions as she's a pop artist. Theres a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals which is a convention of Goodwins theory. She is mostly performing in it with a small narrative of the animals this makes it 90% performance and 10% narrative. Its an emotional music video with a 1990's Madonna image which rebels against conventions.

Both of these music videos by Chris Cunningham goes against conventions;
Pros- keeps the artist popular
-target audience would remember the video as being original and one they loved to watch
-trend setter with a weird music video
Cons- target audience cant relate to the artist
-no interest in the artist
-unpopular, many people don't like the music video, find it too different

Michael Gondry

Kylie Minogue - 'Come into my World'
Its a pop song with a very realistic setting which is on the street surrounded by many people getting on with their jobs. It set in paris and the clothing is very typical for everyday clothes. There is a relationship between the lyrics and video 'come into my world'. More and more Kylie's come into the world so by the end of it there are 3 different Kylie's doing different things but copying what was done in the beginning of the video. She's mainly performing to the camera and their only is a little bit of narrative which is her walking around and a new Kylie coming in. This means that its 90% performance and 10% narrative. The target audience can relate to the music video as its set like its a normal day in Paris.

The White Stripes - 'The hardest button to button'
The genre of the white stripes is rock/alternative. This is shown by the use of their instruments and their clothes and makeup. They dress in a lot of black which is a convention of rock, they have messy hair and dark makeup. There is a relationship between both the visuals and the music with more drums and guitar sets appearing as the beat beats. This leads to make a long line of instruments sitting their while they are still playing them. This is a fun idea as they change settings a lot and still have their kit behind them. There also is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. Its 100% performance as there always singing towards the camera where there isn't a story behind it. The music video is very stereotypical to rock.

Cunningham and Gondry have very different music video styles, Cunningham seems to have wacky ideas which are based in the middle of nowhere with an unknown location. Whereas Gondry uses locations which are city based and are known. I think Gondry's style for music video's would suit my music video more as we want it to be in a town with memories rather than in the middle of nowhere with no one around.

Research & Ideas for chosen songs 5

Jessie Ware - Running (Disclosure remix)

I thought this would be a good song to do a music video to as its genre is House. We could have a girl who is walking to a party and bumping into lots of people she knows who she invites to the party. This would be a good idea as at the party it would be more performance and narrative on the way to the party. The song which is called running demonstrates what she would be doing on the way to the party. I think this would be a good idea as its an upbeat song which will attract the audience and they will probably enjoy the music video.

Research into Music Genres 7 *

In our lessons, we have analysed two films together which are 'Over' - Drake and 'Club cant handle me' - Flo Rida. Music Videos can appeal to an audience by inviting you into their lifestyle during the clip. This can be looking into the camera so you feel they are singing to you, or have expensive possessions in the video so you get invited into what they spend their money on to encourage you to buy some of the stuff they have. We have seen this in both 'Over' and 'Club cant handle me' with the cars that they have and the clothes. This shows us that they live extravagant lifestyles and are not scared of splashing some cash.

Iconography was evident in the music video Drake 'Over' by the use of the lamp which switches on and off and symbolises their lifestyle. This highlights to the audience what he is saying in the song that is an important bit. Drake also switches from low key lighting to high key lighting which makes the audience feel on edge, this is typical for a rap artist to use as they are telling their story of when they were younger when most of them went through a tough time. Drake also wears a red jacket which portrays anger and relates to how he feels.

The Editing portrayed in 'Over' by Drake are the colours which filter through the room, which show how his lifestyle has gone from nothing to a crazy schedule. Theres also relationships between the lyrics and visuals which is a point from Goodwin's theory that is used in music videos. This show Goodwin's Theory is correct while using Drake's video. The video is quiet fast paced so it makes the audience enjoy it more and constantly have something to look at.

The camera shots which are used are a shallow focus of the girl, the girl in the background is blurry so it shows that she may be trying to come between the other two and create a love triangle. This shows that he loves the girl that is in focus and which we see regularly throughout the song. The establishing shot of Drake in the bedroom on the back walls show that the city is moving quickly which relates to his life.

The Iconography which is conveyed in Flo Rida's 'Club cant handle me right now' are the bottles which are alit with sparkles, this fits the narrative with the dancing women. Shows tension typical for rap artist to advertise their crazy lifestyle.

Lighting is shown by low key in the club which changed to high key this shows their is a crazy atmosphere in the club and everyone is having a good time.

The Setting which has been chosen for the music video is in a club typical of dance videos to show dancers and that they are having a good time. The Visuals relate to the music which again is a point from Goodwin's Theory.

The camera shots used are a long shot which focuses on the lamboghini shows their wealth and power which makes their fans want to be just like them with all the new equipment and create the perfect party atmosphere.

Research Into Goodwins Theory 3 *

Goodwin's Theory is based on 8 factors

  • Links between lyrics and visuals
  • Links between music and visuals
  • Genre characteristics
  • Intertextual reference
  • Notions of looking - women being objectified
  • Voyeurism - direct gaze, other people looking at the artist, insight into artists life, screens and mirrors
  • Demands of the record label
  • Performance based narrative based or concept based music videos

In Kesha's song 'Tik Tok' the lyrics which read 'Now, now, we go until they kick us out, out Or the police shut us down, down Police shut us down, down Po-po shut us'
This has reference between the lyrics and visuals as the video shows Kesha getting arrested by the police on the front of a gold car. This shows her rebellious side, and in the next scene she has the handcuff still attached to one hand dancing in the car. This shows that Goodwin's theory is true, and can relate to Kesha's music video.

In Christina Augilera's music video 'Beautiful', music and visuals are shown as the music is very subtle at the beginning which represents the actors to be naïve and innocent. There are many characters which each have a reason for people to be mean to them but the song titled 'Beautiful' gains their confidence and lets them know that they are beautiful no matter what. As the song goes on the beat picks up and it shows that they are gaining belief and are starting to think they are beautiful. They start to come out of their shell and not be bothered about people critizing them for their choices. This is demonstrated by the dead flower at the beginning of the music video and then it blossoming into a beautiful sunflower.

Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber's song 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is very festive. This fits the genre of holiday. The music video is based around Christmas with presents, snow and Christmas outfits. Their also is a Father Christmas which fits into the genre and is a convention for the type of audience Justin Bieber has, as its normally young girls who still believe in Father Christmas. Its a Pop song which is both of the singers genre.

Drake's song 'The Motto' shows an insight into his and his friends lives. They are covered in chains and designers brands, with numerous different flashy cars which show that he has a lot of money to spend. This makes his audience want to be like him buy buying some of the stuff he has and dressing like him. They also look into the camera so its like they are singing\rapping to you which makes you more involved and makes you have an attraction to the artist. As they are all men they attract both younger boys who look up to them and like their music and also girls as they think they are attractive and a bit of eye candy.

In the music video by Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell, Blurred Lines, they have 3 women dancing around in nearly nothing. This objectifies females as they are being flirty towards the singers and are all looking into the camera to involve the audience and act like they are there. The words also objectify women as they are inappropriate for younger viewers. There are also moments when the girls are topless which isn't a very good role for younger girls to look up to.

In Rihanna's video 'Stay' Voyeurism is shown by her being in the bath without any clothes on. This gives us an insight into her life. Also in 'The Motto' by Drake, Lil Wayne has a panning shot to see what he is wearing, he is wearing UGG boots and other brands off clothing, this again gives us an insight into his wealthy lifestyle, and what he can afford to wear. There are also shots of Drake and the other artists wearing extravagant clothing and expensive jewellery.

Research into music channels & target audiences 2

To make this post more detailed, you need to-
1) Read over your points and ensure that you have related your points to music artists and playlists that feature on a regular basis
2) Who the target audience is and why?
3) How the logo appeals to the target audience
4) A summary to explain how your research will assist you with planning your own music video

MTV
  • Who is the target audience and why?
12-24. the average age of the viewer is 21.
  • What type of music does the channel play and why?
Pop, R&B
  • Identify 3-5 examples of artists that feature on a regular basis
Rihanna, Drake, Miley Cyrus, Rita Ora,

4) How is the channel used as a form of branding?

5) How does the logo appeal to the target audience? (Consider the colours and connotations, size of fonts, style of logo)
a) big and bold so you can recognise it.

Why do you think MTV is broken down into different channels (base, hits, dance, rocks, classic?
so MTV can aim at lots of different audiences by playing different songs on different channels so they can boost their popularity. If there was only one channel there would be a smaller audience and would have to merge the different types of genres which would mean less music for each fan.

Why do you music channels are important in appealing to a target audience?
So they can expect the songs that they want to hear to come on rather then a different artist with a different genre which they dont like.

Why do you think there are a variety of music channels?
Because there are lots of different genres of music which can appeal to different people so with a different show for each genre they can play more music from one genre which will increase the popularity of the channel and have more hope for the songs that they want to hear to come on.

What have you learnt from analysing music channels and how will it help you with your own production?

What is a music video? 1 *

What is the purpose of a music video?

  • A market tool to promote artist/song – something being branded in the music video to promote the item to be sold to the viewers of the music video, an example of this in ‘Beauty and the Beat’ by Justin Bieber is the shots of ‘Just Dance 4’
  • Short narrative or representation of artist – a short scene throughout the music video which take part with acting from the artist and another actor\actress. This gives a story behind the song and has a purpose for the music video, it is also entertaining the audience.
  • Attract a particular type of audience – something in the video whether its pretty girls that would attract boys or water parks like in Justin Bieber ‘ Beauty and a Beat’ which will attract a younger female audience.
  • Buy into the artist lifestyle – they normally use expensive items like cars and designer bags which would attract the audience into watching their stuff and seeing what else they have and would make them buy it as they want to look like their icons.
  • Show different generic conventions of a genre/music video -
  • Audience to remember music video – when they think about the song the audience would be able to describe what happens in the music video. If it is a good music video it would be memorable
  • Audience to understand more about a song
  • Audience request music videos – on music channels where you can request music videos. If they enjoy the song and is a good music video then more people would request it, therefore getting the artist more publicity.
  • Build a relationship with the artist

Research Into Music Censorship 4 *

‘Do You Think Music Videos Should Be Censored’

Ofcom acknowledges the importance attached to freedom of expression in the broadcasting environment. Music videos are an artistic and creative medium, which can and do sometimes contain challenging content which some may find offensive. However, while music videos must have room for innovation and creativity, Ofcom has statutory duties with regard to all programmes, including music videos (whatever the genre), to:

• ensure that under-eighteens are protected; and
• enforce generally accepted standards so as to provide adequate protection for members of the public from the inclusion of offensive and/or harmful material. We are aware of the issues faced by broadcasters in this area, including the desire and commercial need to broadcast new music videos as soon as possible after their release, and the challenge of managing the expectations of music labels and other stakeholders. However these pressures must always be secondary to the duty of broadcasters to observe the Code.
We have highlighted the following issues as potentially problematic for broadcasters either because they have been the subject of decisions under the Code, or enquiries from broadcasters.

Robbie Williams- Rock DJ was censored because at the beginning he pulls of his (prosthetic) skin and dances in a skeleton with gory context.
Sean Kingston- Beautiful Girls was censored because it had the word ‘suicidal’ this was changed to ‘in denial’.
Rita Ora- How We Do(Party) was censored because of the words ‘Drunk sex’, ‘Shot of Jack’, ‘Smoking’, ‘Bullshit’, which were removed.
Michael Jackson- They Don’t Care About Us had words ‘Jew me’ ‘Kike me’ replaced with ‘Do me” “Strike Me’.

Rihanna - We Found Love
-smoking
-sexual display
-drug use
-fireworks
-no clothing
-dancing round shop
-abusive
-loud and disruptive
-gambling
-arguing
-tattooing
-police

I don't think that music videos should be censored for numerous reasons;
-there's worse music videos out there
-aiming it at an older audience
-don't use violence in lyrics
-kids wouldn't listen to the lyrics intensely
-its entertainment
-most of her fans are 17-30
-successful
-girls should be happy and proud of their body

Rihanna has good music and people like it, she's successful, stands up for girls.
The narrative is up to the viewer to take it however they want, shouldn't be changed or affected.
Release music not to be a role model, down for the audience to idolise her or not
If you educate your kids they should know that they shouldn't copy what older people do, music videos are for entertainment purposes only.
True reflection of the artist. Censorship would prevent this.
